Description
Sunagakure (砂隠れの里,Sunagakure no Sato; literally meaning "Village Hidden by Sand") is the hidden village of the Land of Wind.
The Puppet Technique is common among Sunagakure ninja. Shinobi from this village believe that the accomplishment of a mission predominates the lives of the ninja trying to accomplish it. As such, they are known to be ruthless in battle, meaning to them that failure is not an option. Should failure seem inevitable, a Suna shinobi would almost surely try to make a success of their mission in some way or another.
The standard attire of this village consists of blue or black uniforms underneath flak jackets of various shades of beige to better blend with their natural environment and include shoulders guards. Sand shinobi also tend to wear a common headpiece consisting of a head-wrap and cloth neck-covers to aid against the sun and sandstorms with a headband on top.
A natural defence of Sunagakure is its location in the desert with the protection of a lack of water and frequent sandstorms to deter large-scale invasions. Sunagakure itself lies in a fortified valley behind cliffs of rock. The passage to travel into the valley is in a cleft between two cliff faces which provides a natural defence for the village, making the area very hard to attack from the ground. The outside cliff face facing the desert has been terraced to provide a place for defending shinobi to stand up against assaulting forces. The buildings inside seem to be made of clay or stucco, which would help to keep the buildings cool and allow them to also withstand the raging sand storms that are common in the area.
History
Sunagakure was founded by the First Kazekage, who gathered the desert-dwelling shinobi under his control with his overwhelming power. At some time in Sunagakure's history they created the Puppet Brigade in an attempt to create a technique that would give life to their puppets in order to increase their combat effectiveness. Sunagakure frequently fought with Konohagakure. To compound the rivalry, following the Third Shinobi War, the Wind Daimyō began outsourcing missions to Konoha, leading to a lack of funding for Sunagakure. Another village Sunagakure has frequently fought with, unsurprisingly due to their close proximity, is Iwagakure. This has left the two villages as age old enemies with each side holding a grudge against the other, a fact which makes them highly unwilling allies.
Recent History
Gaara remained the Kazekage for decades, holding the title until his death at approximately 88 years of age. During his leadership, Sunagakure remained mostly the same. Within the city there were hardly any problems. The economy was not strong, but it was a self sufficient city. Crime within the city was minimal. The city developed into a very communist-like state, and not everyone supported the reforms.
After the last shinobi war a phenomena happened: spirits from within the sand awakened en masse. They’re much like the tailed beasts, but on a lower level of power. They are physical manifestations of chakra, varying in color as well as power. Deserters from the village have attempted to tame these beasts and control them, sometimes successfully though frequently they fail. The deserters have been referred to as Outlanders. They are nomadic and rarely a group of them will find somewhere to settle, however it is not unheard of. There has been one known case of an outlander taming one of the spirits. His name is Raki, and he is the grandson of the Kazekage himself. He seems to have taught others how to achieve this.
Recent Developments
The village was led by Gaara for decades resulting in few changes during that time. His grandson, Raki, presented the only real challenge and disturbance to affairs in Sunagakure. As Raki and his Outlanders were plotting against Suna, they were nearly thwarted, but retreated to make their comeback and retaliatory strike. This was paused, however, when the Oni Lord Tharaxius appeared in the world. With Gaara on his death bed, Raki declared a truce until the Oni Lord had been removed.
The truce ended abruptly while Suna's ninja forces were in Ame helping to liberate the city from the Oni cultists and their leader. Raki and his Outlanders took advantage and their attack caught the village off guard. A great many political opponents were slaughtered, with many others suspected of rebellion either imprisoned or relegated to menial tasks in outposts on the fringes of the Land of Wind. The village is currently led by Raki, with his most loyal supporters holding all important positions within the village. The economy within Suna and the Land of Wind is flourishing at an unprecedented rate, largely due to Raki's reforms and revitalizations.
